Gyeongju crowned K3 League champions

Gyeongju Citizen were crowned 2010 K3 League champions on Saturday as they won 1-0 at home to title rivals Samcheok Sinwoo Electronics to secure an aggregate victory in this season’s championship playoff final series.

The two sides had played out a goalless draw in Samcheok in the first leg, but Samcheok went into the weekend’s second leg with the psychological advantage of having recorded a win and a draw in the matches between the two sides this year and finishing three points ahead of them in Group A of the regular season.

Both teams created a number of chances throughout the first half but went in goalless at the break, however it was the home side who made the breakthrough ten minutes after the restart. Samcheok conceded a free kick wide on the right which was floated into the box and Gyeongju defender Kim Kwang-hyun rose above the surrounding players to head the ball past Min Kyung-il in the Samcheok goal.

The defeat means that Gyeongju become the fourth different side to lift the K3 League since its inception in 2007, whilst Sinwoo Electronics have now finished runners-up in three of the four seasons having come second in 2007, 2008 and now 2010.
