National League round-up: Busan Transport suffer shock defeat

Busan Transportation Corporation suffered a shock home reverse to Changwon City on Tuesday night as the previously high-flying southerners slumped to their second consecutive defeat in the National League second stage competition.

Busan went down 1-0 on the road to Cheonan City at the weekend and lost by the same scoreline to Changwon as Kim Joon-tae’s 62nd minute goal gave Park Mal-bong’s side the points and knocked Busan off the top of the combined rankings table.

Ulsan Mipo Dockyard also suffered a surprise defeat as first stage winners Daejeon Hydro & Nuclear Power picked up their first win of the second stage thanks to a second-half Lee Su-min goal. The slip-ups by Busan and Ulsan allowed Gangneung City to move to the top of both the second stage and combined rankings table as Jang Hyuk-jin hit goals in both first and second half stoppage time to secure a 2-0 victory over Gimhae FC.

Choi Dong-ho was the goal hero for Chungju Hummel as they moved into second place in the second stage standings thanks to a 1-0 win away to Mokpo City. Chungju are currently on fifteen points, four behind stage leaders Gangneung but with a game in hand over the table toppers.

Incheon Korail made it six games without a win as Lee Sang-woo’s late winner gave Goyang Kookmin Bank the three points at the Incheon Munhak World Cup stadium practice pitch, whilst goals from Shin Young-joon and Oh Chul-suk gave Yongin a 2-0 win over Cheonan City, whose misery was compounded when Nam Ki-il was red-carded late in the second half. In Suwon, Jang Hyuk was the goal hero as Suwon City saw off the challenge of Ansan Hallelujah who were also reduced to ten men when Jang In-joon was sent off nine minutes after the break.

The eighth round of the National League second stage will take place this weekend, with five matches taking place on Friday before Yesan host Daejeon and Suwon travel to Chungju on Saturday. The league then goes into a near month-long break before resuming on October 15th, during which time a number of National League sides will represent their respective provinces at the 91st National Sports Festival in Jinju from October 6th-12th.
