National League round-up: Mokpo late show stuns Incheon Korail

Aug 31, 2010

Two late goals for Mokpo City gave the National League’s bottom club a shock victory over championship challengers Incheon Korail during the third round of matches of the 2010 season’s second stage on Tuesday evening.

Lee Seung-joon scored 24 minutes into his Korail debut and the Incheon-based side looked to be heading for the full three points before Jung Su-jong’s 90th minute header looked to have earned Mokpo a point. They were to be celebrating picking up the full three points however as Jo Kun-woo pounced three minutes into injury time to give Mokpo just their second league win of 2010.

Busan Transportation Corporation took advantage of Korail’s slip as they destroyed first stage winners Daejeon Hydro & Nuclear Power 4-0. Kim Sung-bok opened the scoring for the visitors in the 35th minute and then doubled the lead five minutes later. Second half efforts from Kim Kyung-choon and Jang Ji-su completed the rout to move Busan top of the second stage on goal difference and four points clear at the top of the combined standings.

Goyang Kookmin Bank’s revival continued with a 2-1 win at home to Changwon City, as goals either side of half-time from Cha Jong-yoon and Park Sung-jin put them 2-0 up and though Song Keun-su pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 65th minute Goyang held out to move up to third overall.

Reigning champions Gangneung City were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Suwon City, whilst Ulsan Mipo Dockyard edged out Ansan Hallelujah 3-2 thanks to an injury time winner from Kim Sung-min. In the evening’s other matches, Yongin City came back with full points from Yesan following a 2-0 win, whilst Cheonan City kept themselves in the hunt for a playoff spot with a 2-1 win at Gimhae.

Is Mipo really being moved as the expansion team for Gwangju City? I’m excited that Gwangju is getting a team that (hopefully) will not perennially place near the bottom of the table but I hope the controversy will not see it labelled as a new ‘FC Immoral South or North’

No, the new Gwangju team will be a citizen team along the same lines of Daejeon, Daegu and Incheon. They’re running a contest to pick the team name now on the official website so I hope they go for something considerably more imaginative than just tacking “United” onto the city name…
