North Korean U19s lift Asian Championship trophy

A hat-trick from Jong Il-gwan helped North Korea’s U19 side to a 3-2 victory over their Australian counterparts at the Zibo Sports Centre Stadium in China on Sunday to secure a third AFC U-19 Championship title.

The Rimyongsu youngster fired North Korea ahead in the tenth minute before a Kerem Bulut double put the Australians ahead. Jong put past Daniel Bowles just before the break to level the match, and then notched up his third of the match and fifth of the tournament late in the second half to give Yun Jong-soo’s side victory.

North Korea will head to the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup as champions of Asia along with the three other semi-finalists in the shape of Australia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea, the latter who lost 2-0 to their northern rivals at the semi-final stage.

The 2011 FIFA U20 World Cup will be played in Colombia next July and August.
